The Take
One-level living in Golden
Golden's housing market is tight. Mountains to the west, open space to the north and Jefferson County to the east limit how much can be built, and that scarcity keeps values high relative to the broader suburban market.
Many "Golden" ranch listings are actually in Applewood, an unincorporated Jefferson County community that carries a Golden mailing address. Its first subdivisions went up in the early 1950s around large-lot, semi-rural living, which is exactly the ranch stock a lot of one-level buyers are after.
These are the listings the MLS marks as one level: ranches, patio homes and one-level townhomes. Plenty of ranches also have a basement, so "one-level" here means everything you need day to day is on the main floor, not that there are no stairs anywhere. Short sales, bank-owned homes and fixer-uppers are left out.
