About Applewood
The story of Applewood.
Applewood reads less like a postwar development and more like a place that was designed to be somewhere, because it was. The streets curve rather than grid, the lots are wide, and the trees are old and tall enough to create canopy over entire blocks. I work out of our brokerage's headquarters on Youngfield Street, right in the heart of Applewood, and the large-lot, semi-rural feel this community was built around has never really left.
That feel was the original intent. The first subdivisions went up in the early 1950s around the idea of large-lot, semi-rural living, and the name Applewood went on the map officially in 1954.
The name comes from an apple orchard, and not just any orchard. In the 1880s, a homesteading family took apple seedlings as payment for a horse, planted them using dynamite to crack the hard-packed soil, and built an orchard at the foot of the foothills that stood for seven decades before the subdivisions took its name. That origin story says something about the community: people here tend to do things deliberately, and they tend to stick.
Buyers should know upfront that Applewood is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, with no city government of its own, and that it carries a Golden, Colorado mailing address. That surprises a lot of buyers who have been searching by zip code and suddenly find Wheat Ridge and Lakewood listings alongside what they thought was Golden real estate. The practical reality: Applewood sits roughly 10 miles west of downtown Denver, borders Golden to the west and south, and functions as its own distinct residential community. If the search results feel confusing, that's why.
The community's character came into sharp focus when a developer proposed converting Applewood Golf Course, 146 acres of maintained green space woven through the residential fabric, into new housing. The neighborhood organized, pushed back, and won: the land was purchased by the Prospect Recreation and Park District under grant terms that require it to remain golf course, open space, or recreation permanently. If you want neighbors who fight for their green space and lock it in, that's Applewood.

Applewood has a distinct architectural character. Here's the mix of what comes to market.

Lifestyle & Amenities
Living in Applewood.
Dining & Coffee
Blue Nest Coffee is the neighborhood's genuine gathering spot, and Bunker's Taproom at Applewood Golf Course handles the classic-dishes-and-full-bar need without leaving the neighborhood. For groceries and everyday retail, Applewood Village Shopping Center, anchored by King Soopers and Sprouts Farmers Market, sits directly adjacent, with Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Chipotle covering the familiar. And downtown Golden's Washington Avenue restaurant scene is a few miles away: easily accessible, meaningfully different, and worth making a regular stop.
Parks & Outdoor Recreation
Applewood's western edge runs directly into South Table Mountain, and residents access the trail system from residential streets without driving, with miles of mesa trails and panoramic views over downtown Golden and back across the Front Range. North Table Mountain sits just north and is popular with the mountain biking community. The Clear Creek Trail, a paved route connecting Denver to Golden, runs through the Applewood area directly along the creek; serious cyclists use it for car-free commutes in both directions. Then there is Applewood Golf Course itself, the course the community permanently protected from development. Green space at that scale, woven through a suburb, is genuinely unusual.
Schools & Families
Applewood is served by Jefferson County School District R-1 — Jeffco, not Denver Public Schools. For most of the neighborhood, the primary pathway is the Wheat Ridge Articulation Area: Maple Grove Elementary, which has served this community for more than 130 years, feeds into Everitt Middle School and then Wheat Ridge High School. Individual address assignments can vary within Applewood, so buyers with school-age children should verify their specific address using Jeffco's school locator before making assumptions. Jeffco's open enrollment policy gives families meaningful flexibility across the district, which opens options well beyond boundary assignments alone.
Shopping & Entertainment
Youngfield Street is the neighborhood's commercial spine. Applewood Village Shopping Center handles most day-to-day needs: King Soopers, Sprouts, and the usual supporting cast of quick-service restaurants and services. For anything beyond everyday retail, Lakewood's Belmar is 10 minutes east and downtown Golden is a few miles west. What Applewood doesn't have is a walkable commercial district woven into the residential streets; the neighborhood is deliberately residential, and the commercial strip is where commercial belongs. Buyers who want retail at their doorstep will find that trade-off stated honestly, and buyers who want quiet residential streets with easy driving access to good options will find exactly that.
Commute & Transportation
The location is the practical argument for Applewood. It sits roughly 10 miles west of downtown Denver, and I-70 is directly accessible: exits at Youngfield and the Ward Road area put you on the interstate without navigating surface-street congestion. Off-peak, downtown Denver is about 20 minutes. The underappreciated piece is Colorado Highway 58, a connector from Golden and US-6 directly to I-70 at Wheat Ridge, giving residents another reliable route to the interstate without fighting lights. For the mountains, the I-70 corridor begins at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, minutes from Applewood. The RTD W Line runs between Union Station and the Jefferson County Government Center–Golden Station, but Applewood is a drive-to-station neighborhood. The honest summary: you need a car, and you'll be glad you have I-70 and Highway 58 when you do.
