About Montclair
The story of Montclair.
Montclair is a quiet, residential neighborhood with deep civic roots: the Historic Montclair Community Association is recognized as the oldest neighborhood organization in Denver, and the Montclair Civic Building — known locally as the Molkery — is what Denver records as the city's first community center; it now operates as a Denver Parks & Recreation event facility and anchors Montclair Park, the neighborhood's physical and civic center.
The founding covenants left a physical legacy that held: lots twice the Denver standard, homes at least three stories tall, clad in brick or stone. The Montclair Historic District, one of the city's first five landmark districts, covers the core blocks between East 7th and East 12th Avenues, Newport to Pontiac Streets, and Richthofen Castle still stands at 7020 E. 12th Ave — a 38-room Romanesque Revival landmark, now a private residence but visible from the street.
That legacy traces to 1885, when German baron Walter von Richthofen — uncle to the WWI flying ace known as the Red Baron — platted a new town southeast of Denver's boundaries. The pitch was an escape from a rowdy young city; the vision, a European health resort he called "the Carlsbad of Colorado." The resort never fully materialized, but the Town of Montclair incorporated in 1888, and when Denver moved to annex it, residents fought back all the way to the Colorado Supreme Court. They lost, and the resistance became part of the neighborhood's identity.
East Colfax Avenue runs along the neighborhood's northern edge with coffee shops and casual dining, though it functions more as a boundary than a destination. For errands, Lowry Town Center sits a short drive southeast across 6th Avenue and Quebec with grocery-anchored retail, and Lowry's Hangar 2 dining district and the Monaco/Leetsdale corridor are also close.
The trade-off for buyers is straightforward: a quieter residential interior, with dining and errands at the edges — in its way, the same escape from the city von Richthofen was selling in 1885.

Lifestyle & Amenities

Dining & Coffee
Montclair does not have a defined commercial dining strip within its own boundaries, and buyers should know that going in. East Colfax Avenue runs along the northern edge and offers coffee shops and casual dining, but Colfax is a high-traffic corridor that functions more as a boundary than a neighborhood destination. The more practical resource is Lowry Town Center, just southeast across 6th Avenue and Quebec, which provides grocery-anchored retail and additional dining options. Lowry's Hangar 2 dining district, also a short drive, has added meaningful restaurant density to the area, and the Monaco/Leetsdale corridor to the southwest is another option residents use regularly. The trade-off is straightforward: a quieter, more residential interior, with the restaurant scene at the edges.
Parks & Outdoor Recreation
Montclair Park is the neighborhood's anchor: passive open space designed in the English landscape tradition, with tennis courts, horseshoe courts, a playground, basketball, and picnic facilities. The park and the Molkery together form the civic heart of the neighborhood and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more active amenities, the Montclair Recreation Center is a full-service city facility serving the broader Montclair and Lowry area, with a six-lane lap pool, a leisure pool with water slide, a gymnasium, a weight room, a pottery studio, and a bike room. Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum at Lowry, one of Denver's better aviation and aerospace museums, is minutes from the neighborhood's eastern edge.
Schools & Families
Montclair School of Academics and Enrichment, a PK-5 Denver Public Schools campus, sits within the neighborhood boundaries as the named neighborhood elementary. Families with middle schoolers feed to Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences, a 6-8 campus with a gifted and talented program and a broad sports and enrichment lineup. George Washington High School is the primary feeder high school, known for its IB program, strong AP course catalog, Speech & Debate, and Robotics teams. DPS operates a choice-based enrollment system, and current assignments should always be verified directly with the district.
Shopping & Entertainment
Lowry Town Center is the most practical convenience hub for Montclair residents, with grocery, pharmacy, and retail a short drive southeast across 6th Avenue. The Lowry redevelopment, built on the former Air Force base site, added meaningful commercial infrastructure to what had been a gap in this part of Denver, and Montclair's proximity to it is a genuine quality-of-life asset. For arts and culture, Wings Over the Rockies is nearby. The neighborhood's own commercial footprint is limited to what sits along Colfax. Buyers who want walkable daily retail within the neighborhood boundaries will need to adjust expectations, but the trade-off is a quieter, more residential interior.
Commute & Transportation
RTD Route 15/15L runs along East Colfax on the northern boundary, one of Denver's highest-frequency bus corridors, with direct access to downtown. RTD Route 6 runs along East 6th Avenue on the southern boundary, also connecting downtown without a transfer. By car, Montclair sits approximately four to six miles east of downtown Denver, typically 15 to 20 minutes via 6th Avenue or Colfax. There is no light rail station within Montclair, and none is proximate; this is a bus-transit neighborhood. Buyers who rely on rail access for their commute should weigh that directly, while buyers who drive or use the bus lines will find the access straightforward.
