About Lowry

The story of Lowry.

Lowry is the rare master-planned Denver community that is finished. Its buildout completed years ago, and it shows: the trees are mature, the parks are established, and the community has had time to develop a genuine identity. Planned from the beginning as a complete neighborhood, not a subdivision, it holds approximately 4,500 homes and 800 acres of parks and open space.

The housing was laid out in the New Urbanist tradition — front porches facing the street, alley-loaded garages, tree-lined boulevards, and a connected street grid — and the redevelopment preserved three structures on the National Register of Historic Places, along with Officers' Row, the historic district of base-era houses.

For over half a century, this land belonged to the Air Force. From 1938 until the base closed in 1994, Lowry Air Force Base was one of the most active training installations in the country — more than 1.1 million military personnel trained here — and the redevelopment of the land it left behind became a national model for base reuse. The neighborhood's name honors Lieutenant Francis Brown Lowry, a Denver native killed in World War I, and the history lives on in the preserved buildings, the museum, the street names, and the chapel where President Eisenhower attended services during his summers in Denver.

Daily life centers on Hangar 2, the converted WWII-era hangar turned dining district, and the Safeway-anchored Lowry Town Center, for food and everyday errands. Cherry Creek is roughly a ten-minute drive for boutique shopping and denser dining, and Central Park, Lowry's larger neighbor, sits just to the north. RTD bus routes 6, 10, and 73 serve the neighborhood.

That maturity is one of the things buyers who choose Lowry keep coming back to. The trade-offs: retail density beyond its own centers is modest, and Lowry has no rail service — the A Line belongs to Central Park next door.

Architecture & Inventory

What you'll find in Lowry.

Lowry has a distinct architectural character. Here's the mix of what comes to market.

01 ·

New Urbanist Single-Family

Front porches facing the street, alley-loaded garages, and tree-lined boulevards, with architecture running from Queen Anne and Tudor to Craftsman bungalow and Foursquare.

02 ·

Townhomes

A core New Urbanist product type, many alley-loaded, for buyers who want Lowry's parks and community character without the maintenance of a larger single-family home.

03 ·

Adapted Historic Structures

The former Steam Plant is now loft housing: industrial-scale historic architecture repurposed for residential living, with nothing else quite like it in this part of the city.

Lifestyle & Amenities

Living in Lowry.

Dining & Coffee

The center of Lowry's dining scene is Hangar 2, a WWII-era hangar on the National Register of Historic Places converted into a dining district. Lowry Beer Garden runs a big covered outdoor garden with a Colorado-focused craft beer list and a menu built around sausages, pretzels, and house-ground burgers. Cafe Mercato brings Southern Italian fare with house-made pastas and gelato, and Denver Beer Company's Lowry taproom rounds out the district with a full food menu alongside the beer program. For coffee, Logan House Coffee is the neighborhood's coworking-friendly go-to, while Copper Door Coffee Roasters runs a small-batch program with a following well outside Lowry. Lowry Town Center, anchored by Safeway, handles groceries, though the retail mix there is lighter than some buyers expect.

Parks & Outdoor Recreation

Lowry's 800 acres of parks and open space is not a standard figure for an urban Denver neighborhood, and the park network was central to the master plan from day one. Lowry Wetlands Park runs along a naturalized Westerly Creek channel with native riparian vegetation and walking paths. The Lowry Dog Park has separate large and small dog areas and an agility course. The Westerly Creek Trail connects Lowry into the urban trail network shared with the Central Park neighborhood, and a handful of smaller parks plus the Lowry Sports Complex round out the system. For dog owners, trail runners, cyclists, and families with young kids, this is one of the stronger arguments for the neighborhood.

Schools & Families

Lowry Elementary School serves PreK through 5th grade within the neighborhood. Stanley British Primary School occupies the former Officers' Club building and Officers' Row, the historic district of base-era houses preserved as part of the redevelopment, and is a well-regarded independent school with a distinctive educational approach. For middle and high school, students attend Denver Public Schools outside the neighborhood; families should confirm current enrollment zones through DPS SchoolChoice, as boundaries can shift. The combination of an in-neighborhood elementary and a respected private school option on the same grounds as preserved military history is a particular feature of Lowry that doesn't exist elsewhere in Denver.

Shopping & Entertainment

Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum occupies the original 1930s Air Force hangar and is one of the genuinely important aviation museums in the Rocky Mountain region, with a serious collection of historic aircraft and space vehicles. It is not a regional-airport curiosity; it draws visitors from across the country, and having it as your neighborhood museum is a particular kind of Lowry-specific asset. Beyond Hangar 2 and Wings, Lowry's retail and entertainment density is modest. Cherry Creek is a ten-minute drive and fills that gap for buyers who want boutique shopping and a denser dining scene.

Commute & Transportation

Lowry sits approximately six miles from downtown Denver, a typical drive of fifteen to twenty-five minutes depending on time of day and route. Cherry Creek is roughly ten minutes by car, and I-225 is accessible for commutes to the Denver Tech Center or the DIA employment corridor. The key trade-off versus Central Park is transit: Lowry has no light rail or commuter rail service. RTD bus routes 6, 10, and 73 serve the neighborhood with connections downtown, and residents can reach the A Line at Central Park Station by car or bike. The Lowry Community Master Association governs the parks and community events, and the independently published Front Porch neighborhood newspaper covers Lowry alongside neighboring NE Denver communities, part of the small-town-within-a-city quality residents consistently describe as Lowry's defining characteristic.
