About Evergreen
The story of Evergreen.
Evergreen is the mountain community that Metro Denver buyers discover and never fully get over. At roughly 7,000 feet elevation in the Rocky Mountain foothills west of Denver, it offers genuine mountain character — ponderosa pines, elk in the meadows, snow that stays, and the slow, unhurried pace of true mountain living — without the full isolation of Colorado's high-country towns. Downtown Denver is approximately 30–40 minutes by car depending on traffic and conditions. Vail is about 90 minutes west; closer resorts like Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are 45–60 minutes.
Evergreen Lake, at the center of downtown, freezes reliably each winter and hosts a popular outdoor ice skating facility managed by the Evergreen Park & Recreation District. In summer it's paddled and fished. The surrounding meadow fills with elk herds during morning and evening hours. Downtown Evergreen has independent restaurants, a Tuesday farmers market in season, galleries, and the Hiwan Heritage Park Museum. It has the self-contained quality that mountain towns need to work as permanent communities.
The housing ranges widely: modest mid-century cabins at lower price points on forested lots, to large custom mountain-modern homes on multi-acre parcels at the upper end. Many properties are on 1–5 acre lots, which gives the community a spacious, private feel. There's no grid — roads follow terrain, addresses are challenging to navigate without local knowledge, and cell service varies by elevation and canyon.
The trade-offs of Evergreen life are real: car dependency is total, winter road conditions require 4WD and snow tires, and the commute to Denver can be complicated by weather or I-70 traffic. But for buyers who have decided that mountain living is their priority, Evergreen offers the best combination of community infrastructure, Denver proximity, and authentic mountain character available in the region.
