About Englewood
The story of Englewood.
Englewood is its own city, not a Denver neighborhood, and its independent streak still runs through the community today — a small city anchored by nationally significant medical institutions, with a city center in active redevelopment.
The housing stock holds one genuine landmark: Arapahoe Acres, a 124-home subdivision built between 1949 and 1957 in the International and Usonian styles — in 1998, the first post-WWII suburban residential subdivision in the United States listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Homes there don't come up often.
The history behind that independence is scrappy. Englewood incorporated in 1903 and beat back two Denver annexation attempts in the mid-1920s, first by four votes, then by six. Then in 1968 came Cinderella City Mall, which opened as the largest covered shopping mall west of the Mississippi River — a spectacular statement that became a cautionary tale as suburban retail shifted, closing its last store in 1997.
What rose on the demolished mall site was CityCenter Englewood, one of Colorado's earliest transit-oriented mixed-use redevelopments, with the old Foley's department store building retained and converted to house Englewood's City Hall and public library, the one physical thread connecting old to new. Two institutions give Englewood an anchor that most cities its size don't have: Swedish Medical Center, one of the largest hospitals in the Denver metro, and Craig Hospital, a nationally ranked rehabilitation hospital that draws patients from across the country. They aren't just local employers; they bring a professional density that shapes the fabric of the city.
The candid note for buyers: CityCenter is under active redevelopment today, with new residential, retail, and restaurants planned. It's a site in motion, not a finished product — a fit for buyers drawn to a fiercely independent small city that's remaking its center.

Lifestyle & Amenities
Living in Englewood.
Dining & Coffee
South Broadway is the spine of Englewood's dining and social scene, and the honest truth is that it doesn't feel like you've left Denver when you cross the city line: the corridor runs continuously from Baker through Englewood, and the character carries. Breakfast on Broadway has the feel of a neighborhood diner that's earned its regulars. Café 180 sells lunch at set prices and puts its proceeds toward feeding neighbors in need, a genuinely community-minded concept worth knowing about. The Englewood Tavern is a neighborhood bar with live music on rotation. The dining scene here isn't the metro's densest, but it's authentic: the kind of places that stick around because the neighborhood uses them.
Parks & Outdoor Recreation
Belleview Park is the city's flagship green space, and it's been doing its job for a long time. The Englewood Farm & Train has operated for more than 50 years, open Memorial Day through Labor Day, with a petting zoo that still reliably delights. Cushing Park offers a fishing pond, basketball courts, picnic pavilions, and a free skate park. On the city's western edge, the South Platte River and Mary Carter Greenway trail provide access to a regional network that connects north and south through the metro. All told, Englewood has more than 244 acres of developed parkland, more than the city's footprint might suggest.
Schools & Families
Englewood operates its own school district, Englewood Schools, entirely separate from Denver Public Schools. That's a meaningful distinction for families moving from cities where the neighborhood school is automatically part of the larger urban system. Englewood High School's modern campus is co-located with Englewood Middle School. The district's record on the Boettcher Scholarship, one of Colorado's most competitive and prestigious academic scholarships, is notable: Englewood High has produced more Boettcher Scholars than any other metro-area high school. Englewood Leadership Academy has consistently ranked among Colorado's top middle schools. For current enrollment and program information, go directly to the district's website rather than relying on third-party ratings.
Shopping & Entertainment
When I want to see live music without paying downtown parking rates or fighting a 3,000-person crowd, I end up at the Gothic Theatre. It's on South Broadway, a mid-sized room that books a real range: nationally touring acts, regional artists, across genres. I've caught more than a few shows there, and the room itself sounds good. It's one of the genuinely great mid-sized venues on the Front Range, and it happens to be in Englewood. CityCenter, which occupies the former Cinderella City site, is honest-about-its-current-state retail: Harbor Freight, Ross, Petco, that tier. It functions, it has good transit access, and it is actively transforming under new ownership with serious plans for residential and new retail. It's a work in progress worth watching.
Commute & Transportation
Englewood sits about 10 miles south of downtown Denver via I-25, which runs directly through the city. Off-peak, you're looking at 15 to 20 minutes to the core, and the Denver Tech Center and Lone Tree corridor are accessible directly south on the same freeway. Hampden Avenue (US-285) gives you east-west movement, and Santa Fe Drive (US-85) is a surface arterial alternative when the freeway is congested. RTD light rail serves CityCenter, useful for downtown commuters who want to avoid the drive; check RTD directly for current line designations before making transit-dependent decisions. The honest framing on walkability: Englewood is car-dependent for most daily errands. The light rail connection is real, but this is not a neighborhood where you'll leave the car home for grocery runs.
